Standardized ecological indicators to assess aquatic food webs: The ECOIND software plug-in for Ecopath with Ecosim models
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ecological indicators are useful tools to analyse and communicate historical changes in ecosystems and plausible future scenarios while evaluating environmental status. Here we introduce a new plug-in to the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) food web modelling approach, which is widely used to quantitatively describe aquatic ecosystems. The plug-in (ECOIND) calculates standardized ecological indicators. We describe the primary functionality of ECOIND and provide an example of its application in both static and temporal-spatial dynamic modelling, while we highlight several related features including a new taxonomy input database (species traits) and the ability to analyse input uncertainty on output results. ECOIND adds new capabilities to the widely used EwE food web modelling approach and enables broadening its applications into biodiversity and conservation-based frameworks to contribute to integrated ecosystem analyses. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. An Introduction to the EcoTroph R Package: Analyzing Aquatic Ecosystem Trophic Networks
Recent advances in aquatic ecosystem modelling have particularly focused on trophic network analysis through trophodynamic models. We present here a R package devoted to a recently developed model, EcoTroph. This model enables the analysis of aquatic ecological networks and the related impacts of fisheries. It was available through a plug-in in the well-known Ecopath with Ecosim software or thr...
متن کاملAdding realism to foraging arena predictions of trophic flow rates in Ecosim ecosystem models: Shared foraging arenas and bout feeding
We update the Ecopath with Ecosim software for aquatic ecosystem modeling to allow users to represent intensification of inter-specific competition through shared use of space–time restricted foraging arenas, as well as predation occurring in periodic short feeding bouts rather than continuously over time. Our study indicates that assuming shared use of foraging arenas can have pathological imp...
متن کاملChallenges and problems in modelling seamount ecosystems and their fisheries
The ecological and oceanographic importance of seamounts for the status of marine food webs and biodiversity has recently been recognized. Seamounts have been intensively exploited in all world oceans, and serious stock depletion has been detected in every case. Resident seamount fish are mostly slow-growing and late-reproducing while transient migratory fish also rely on seamount food webs, so...
متن کاملResearch Article: Trophic dynamics analysis and ecosystem structure for some fish species of northern Oman Sea
In the present study, a trophic structure model for some fish species of the northern Oman Sea is developed through using mass balance modeling software, Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE). In this model, we simulated 16 functional groups spread across an area of 3998.20 km2 from 2017 to 2018. Mean trophic level in the area of the present study was 3.49. Values calculated for system omnivory and connect...
متن کاملEcopath with Ecosim: methods, capabilities and limitations
TheEcopathwithEcosim (EwE)modeling approach combines software for ecosystem trophicmass balance analysis (Ecopath), with a dynamic modeling capability (Ecosim) for exploring past and future impacts of fishing and environmental disturbances as well as for exploring optimal fishing policies. Ecosim models can be replicated over a spatial map grid (Ecospace) to allow exploration of policies such a...
